'Host' Hits 10-Million Mark in 21 Days

The Host by director Bong Joon-ho, Wednesday hit the 10-million-viewer mark, becoming the fourth film ever to do so.
The record came after 21 days, the shortest period ever to achieve that many numbers of viewers. The movie was released July 27.
According to Show Box, the film's distributor, the number of viewers surpassed 10 million as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, after reaching 9.89 million viewers on Tuesday, National Liberation Day.
Only three local movies have ever attracted more than 10 million spectators _ "Silmido" (2003), "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" (2004) and most recently, "King and the Clown" (2005).
"Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" (2004) was recorded as the first film to attract 10 million viewers in the shortest time span or 39 days, before The Host broke the mark.
"The King and the Clown" (2005) hit that number in 45 days, while "Silmido" (2003) surpassed the record in 58 days.
As the movie is now showing on 620 screens nationwide, the largest number of screens ever for a film, it is expected to soon surpass the all-time record set by "The King and the Clown" with 12.3 million viewers.
The film, with a production budget of 15 billion won, revolves around a family that fights a mutant from the Han River after the daughter of the first son of the family is captured by the monster, a creature created due to toxic chemicals.
The film boasts unprecedented computer graphics that allow a realistic-looking monster as well as an interesting plot that touches on social and political issues.
The tickets reserved for the sci-fi film before its release have been sold at 95 percent theater capacity through the Internet, raising expectations that The Host may become the new record-breaking film.
