'Mother - 2009' Sweeps Blue Dragon Awards

Best film in the 30th Blue Dragon Film Awards on Wednesday went to "Mother - 2009" directed by Bong Joon-ho. The ceremony was held at the KBS Hall in Seoul.

"Mother - 2009" tells the story of a mother whose son is wrongly indicted for murder and who struggles to hunt down the real killer. The film was invited to this year's Cannes International Film Festival for the Un Certain Regard section.

Best director went to Kim Yong-hwa, who directed "Take Off", and best actor to Kim Myung-min for his part in "Closer to Heaven". Ha Ji-won, who co-starred in "Closer to Heaven", was the winner of best actress award. Jin Goo of "Mother" won best supporting actor and Kim Hae-sook of "Thirst" best supporting actress.

JK Youn, who directed "Haeundae", received the award for the film that drew the biggest audience. "I would like to say thank you to every one of those 11.53 million people who watched my film", he said in accepting the prize.

Kang Hyeong-cheol, director of "Scandal Makers" ("Scandal Makers"), won best rookie director, and best new actor award went to Yang Ik-june, who wrote, directed, and starred in his debut film "Breathless". Best rookie actress was shared by Kim Kkobbi of "Breathless" and Park Bo-young of "Scandal Makers" ("Scandal Makers").

Jang Jin-yeong, a two-time winner of the best actress award who died of stomach cancer in September at the age of 37, was given a posthumous special award.
