Cultural Archetype projects start to pay back and shine

Cultural archetypes are being used in many ways for subject matters and costume in the movie "The King and the Clown"

"The King and the Clown" (directed by Lee Joon-ik, starred Kam Woo-sung, Jeong Jin-Yeong, Kang Sung-yeon, Lee Joon-gi), the current box office no. 1 movie, became a hot issue as it has tried to combine and mix the royal clown performance and cultural archetypes which are developed by the Korea Culture & Content Agency (President & CEO Suh, Byoung-Moon).

It has been known that "Digital Hanyang", the core task of the 2002 cultural archetype project by N4D (Representative; Lee Don-Ryong) was applied to produce the movie for its background of Hanyang, the capital city of the Josun Dynasty, and the palace under the Emperor Yeonsan.

"Digital Hanyang", a digital contents of lifestyle through a restoration of Hanyang and its surrounding areas in the late Josun era, is a task to create layouts, image maps and 3D restoration models of 239 major buildings and places within the capital city including a palace (Gyeongbokgung), Yukjogeori, Wunjongga, Bukchon.

Particularly playing a critical role in the pre-filming process of "King's Man" were the visualizations and 3D modeling, and spatial navigation model of some major buildings in the capital city such as governmental offices, private residential houses and commercial areas.

From the planning phase before actual filming process, the production staff, determined to shoot the movie with the existing Gyongbokgung sets built for TV drama series, and conducted simulations of mock filming for scenario and screen work through the 3D restoration virtual set of Gyeongbokgung in the "Digital Hanyang".

"We managed to prepare for camera angles, staffs, and camera equipments utilizing the virtual sets of "Digital Hanyang" before we actually start the actual filming process". said Mr. Jung Yong-Ki, a producer of "King's Man", "and, Camera simulations through the virtual sets helped a lot reduce the cost related to film scheduling and staffing.

The 3D virtual sets played a critical role in the movie in 2 scenes--a feast in the palace when Gonggil(starred by Lee Joon-gi) and Jangsaeng(starred by Kam Woo-sung) were dragged into Gyeongbokgung and the front view of Gyeongbokgung--a turn and twist in terms of dramatic flow.

"We speculated camera angles a lot because they are very crucial for the movie", recalled a production staff. "we could shoot the scenes in a way we wanted thanks to simulations of camera angles through the virtual set". He added.

On the other hand, it is expected that KOCCA's digital contents business will contribute a lot to drama series and films in the future with subject matter, filming, set, costume design, etc.

Also, a detective drama series entitled "Josun Police" which deals with forensic medicine and scientific investigation in the Josun Dynasty based on "Jeungsumuwonrok", a record of criminal cases of the era, will be broadcast by MBC as a special program for the incoming lunar new year's day.

Not only that, the output of KOCCA's cultural archetype business will also be exploited in restoring costume and construction of the Balhae age (one of the ancient countries based in Korean peninsula) for the first TV drama series on Balhae, which will be aired by KBS in June.
