[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Three Days"

Dramas taking a turn for the bleak is certainly not a shift a lot of fans appreciate, but since the domestic audiences seem to like their darker stories, this is something we will have to get used to for this spring season. The good thing about it though, is that rather than going for makjang, we are seeing a rise in suspense thrillers with highly cinematic qualities. And this is a good thing for an industry mainly about cheap and quick entertainment. "Three Days" is one of these new series going for a more serious approach.

Premise

"Three Days" follows a presidential bodyguard after he is framed for an attempt against the president's life. Having to prove his innocence, he and all the other players find themselves in a big mess of a national security alert. In what seems to be more of a character- and perhaps bromance-heavy suspense thriller, Park Yoo-chun plays the bodyguard to Son Hyun-joo's president and given the premise and cast, this drama is being treated as dark cinematic goodness by all involved.

The Worrying

Audience

While the filming system in Korean televised fiction is what it is, this will always be a worry. The thing is, this type of a genre and series does not really cater much to the core drama audience. So who will be interested in it then? Low ratings is a dangerous thing. While they do not mean much to viewers, they mean the world to stations. If this does not find a big enough viewer following, changes will come. And changes with this system in place are always dangerous.

Fanbase influence

Park Yoo-chun is a solid actor who is escaping the image of an idol-actor fast, but there is still a loyal fanbase of his music career to think about as well. If those start demanding changes and the station yields, it can ruin the story or the production. If the main audience also wants more romance, the core of the plot can potentially shift, which is a huge change as well.

Fresh plot

We had our wild chase drama last year in the form of a father trying to survive for his daughter. "Two Weeks" was also a suspense action series, but a lot of emphasis was placed on the hero's emotional and moral journey through coming to terms with his past and improving himself for his future. With the relationship this time being that of a boss and employer, but possibly also friends, it will be interesting to see that kind of a connection explored, which it hopefully will be.

Talented cast

All of the main and secondary cast includes some strong names. Aside Son Hyun-joo and Yoon Je-moon, who are obvious solid choices, Jang Hyun-sung is usually taking up smaller roles, but has the acting chops to always carry them nicely. He is also a very known face to fans of more unique in genre dramas. The two ladies on board, Park Ha-sun and So Yi-hyun have also played well-written female characters before and can carry such a role, which they will hopefully have.

Hidden agenda

With so many good actors and actresses on board and this being a suspense work and the premise being what it is, they have the chance to create many surprising plot twists and an air of doubt. There will be villains, there will be traitors and having so many characters acting without viewers knowing who is a friend or foe can bring about interesting conflicts.

Final Thoughts

"Three Days" is looking a bit vague on its plot still, but the promotion and people involved are very encouraging. While it can go very wrong and become quite boring if the makers cannot keep the thrills up, it can also be a blood pressure raising ride full of excitement and good writing. Hopefully, they can use their fresh premise and genre in the best way possible and create something good.
