[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.07.13 ~ 2012.07.15

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.07.13~ 2012.07.15)

This past weekend saw "Deranged" enjoy a second week at the top, with "Spiderman" still right behind it in second. Park Jeong-woo's disaster film was the only film to breach the million admissions mark, claiming 1,151,314 (43.60%) admissions and moving its total up to 3,229,597. The weekend top ten contains only two other Korean entries, Kim Dong-bin "Two Moons" and Koo Ja-hong "Dangerously Excited" both made their entry into the chart but only managed a little over 330,000 between them.

"The Amazing Spiderman" add 681,325 admissions to its cause, placing the big Hollywood comic book adaptation on 4,397,900. That was enough to surpass "Architecture 101" as the number four highest grossing film released in Korea this year. At number three is Kim Dong-bin's fear film "Two Moons" which started its run with 205,755. Park Han-byul, Kim Ji-suk and Park Jin-joo star in this one, as three people "who meet one endless night without knowing why in an isolated house in the middle of the forest". Kim Dong-bin's "Red Eye" (2004) was actually the first Korean film I saw, but I am hoping that this one will be a little more captivating. "Dangerously Excited" is comedy drama that stars Yoon Je-moon and Song Ha-yoon in light-hearted comedy about keeping life calm and under control. Koo Ja-hong's piece only pulled just 128,081 admissions in a generally quiet weekend at the movies, with the rest of the entries seemingly buying their time before the late July films are upon us.

The Japanese animation "A Letter to Momo" managed to crack the 100,000 admissions mark, but only just. This is the films second week in the chart since its release on the fifth, and this past weekend saw it slip from its opening weekend position of three to five with 3.80% of the ticket sales. From this point on the US and UK reign supreme. "Limitless" from the U.S is the first of which and it managed to pull 61,072 spectators in as director Neil Burger takes us through his new mystery sci-fi thriller. "Midnight in Paris" was next, slipping one position from last week to settle at seven with 60,241 admissions (2.50%).

Despite being in the top ten for seven weeks, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" has only pulled 1,606,673 admissions during its run in Korea thus far. The film fell from last week's number four (2.80%), to this week's eight (2.00%) as it failed to make anymore ground on its competitors. The last two films are from the UK. John Madden's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" is a comedy drama starring the lovely Judi Dench, and at number ten "StreetDance 2".
