[HanCinema's Weekend Box Office Review] 2013.01.25 ~ 2013.01.27

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2013.01.25 ~ 2013.01.27)

Lee Hwan-hyeong's "Miracle in Cell No.7" stormed the top ten this past weekend to snatch 42% of tickets sales (1,241,737 admissions). Lee's previous film ("The Champ") struggled at the box office and only collected 535,766 admissions during its run last year. In rising to the top, "Miracle in Cell No.7" dislodged Jo Jin-kyoo's "Man on the Edge" (previous known as "The Gangster Shaman") at the top of the pile and was also able to quell the kids' enthusiasm over Korea's favourite penguin Pororo and his new film: "Pororo, The Racing Adventure".

"Man on the Edge" had two weekends as Korea's choice film and, with the addition of this past weekend's 483,832 (16.5%), this hybrid comedy is now sitting pretty with 3,466,791 admissions. At number three is Park Yeong-gyoon's "Pororo, The Racing Adventure" which claimed 295,030 (10.3%) admissions as Korea's favourite childhood mascot takes to the big screen. As an animation, Pororo had some tough competition as it was tailed by the Oscar nominated film "Hotel Transylvania" with snatched 178,785 admissions despite falling one position from last weekend.

Another Oscar nomination follows in Victor Hugo's book adaptation "Les Misérables". The French film is approaching 6 millions admissions here in Korea and has been well received the world over. At number six sits "Jack Reacher", Tom Cruises new film that has him tracking down a rogue sniper with all the action and thrills one comes to expect of Cruise. The director Christopher McQuarrie is currently also working the script for "Top Gun2" and well as "Mission Impossible 5". "Jack Reacher" snuck up to second last week, but has subsequently tumbled a few places with just 115,730 admissions. "The Impossible" was another U.S film that failed to hold Korea's gaze, falling from last weekend's number four, to this weekend's seven with 3.2% (97,402).

Looking lower down the list now and at number eight is "Life of Pie". Despite being praised overseas, Koreans have not quite taken to Martel adaptation and the film had only scrapped together 1,480,176 admissions since its release on the first. Kim Ji-hoon's "The Tower" has moved on to 5,133,118 admissions after adding 83,617 (2.8%) over the weekend. Finally, there was a re-release of the 2004 Japanese animation "Detective Conan: Magician of the Silver Key", as it started its second stab at Korean audiences with 82,108 admissions.
