[Interview #1] How 17-year-old Kim So-hyun prepares for her next drama

She had her first real gig at the age of 17. She had to act with those her age without anyone older than her leading the way. It was a big challenge for her. As soon as she was done with a drama, she joined the movie set, and although she couldn't be with the other sisters and brothers as she is still underaged, Kim So-hyun had another experience.

In the movie "Pure Love - Movie", Kim So-hyun appears as Beom-sil's (Do Kyung-soo) first love and has a crippled leg which forces her to limp. She had to be careful about her leg and concentrate on it the whole time. She prepared for this movie like any other grown-up would have and this is what makes her stand out amongst her fellow actors and actresses.

"At first we thought about putting a cast around it to make it more obvious. But that turned out to be more uncomfortable as it stopped circulation through my leg. In the end, it was all about practice. I didn't get help from any equipment. I checked every angle and routine and made sure I didn't limp too much as the director asked me to".

Soo-ok is none like the other characters Kim So-hyun has been before. Unlike the other characters who are always dressed in Hanbok or uniform, Soo-ok is just a bright and cheerful 17-year-old girl. Kim So-hyun focused on being easy with her character.

Kim So-hyun said, "The character is the same age as me so I wanted to be more innocent and pure. My first goal was to make Soo-ok seem as innocent as possible. The hardest part I experienced throughout the whole preparation was making sure that Soo-ok didn't seem distorted. There are certain scenes in the movie where Soo-ok might be misunderstood so I told myself that Soo-ok wasn't like that".

"The director wanted to make a misunderstanding between Soo-ok and the doctor. He wanted the audience to think there was a misunderstanding between the two. However, from my point of view, I didn't think that wasn't right so I told the director what I thought. I felt that Soo-ok had suddenly become bad. Soo-ok only has eyes for Beom-sil but she just doesn't show it. Although I couldn't openly show everyone that, I still wanted to be careful".

There were minor disagreements but director Lee Eun-hee-I and Kim So-hyun depended on each other greatly. Kim So-hyun had discussions with the director every time they met and she said, "The director would ask my opinion first and would take into concern anything I say or ask for. She likes to share thoughts and talk about them. So, I trusted the director and talked to her openly about it".

"Pure Love - Movie" also took a challenge to visual attempt. Kim So-hyun whose face is usually fair white, came out with dirt on her face and she lowered her face tone slightly so she looked tanned and old-fashioned. She was surprised to see herself when she first did the make-over.

"I was very surprised. The make-up itself was very dark when I was being made up. I wondered if this was really happening. I asked if it was alright and the artist replied to me saying Soo-ok was the fairest of the darkest. It felt awkward at first but as the making continued, I got used to it and became one with the set and the people".
