Jeonju Int'l Film Fest Opens

The 16th Jeonju International Film Festival kicked off on Thursday for a season of 200 films from 47 countries until May 9.

The JIFF is less commercial than the Busan International Film Festival in the fall, and features more independent films.

Kim Young-jin, a chief programmer, said, "The biggest difference this year is the expansion of space. We created more opportunities for more people to enjoy the festival through outdoor screenings and exhibitions".

Tickets to the opening film, "Partisan" by Ariel Kleiman, had sold out in no time. The screening was preceded by a red-carpet event and concerts at Jeonju Stadium at 7 p.m. Some 4,000 seats were packed with spectators.

Heavyweights included Kim Dong-ho of the Presidential Committee for Cultural Enrichment, film director Im Kwon-taek, and actors Moon So-ri, Kim Woo-bin and Ryu Deok-hwan.
