Korean Blockbuster "Host" Scheduled for Jan. 24 Debut in U.S.

Have you been waiting for a realistic monster movie? You are in luck because the Korean blockbuster "The Host" will open at a theater in Boston on Jan. 24 and in Pittsburgh on Feb. 24 before being shown in other U.S. locations on Mar. 9.

You may remember Korean Director Bong Joon-ho from "Memories of Murder". Well, he has done it again with "The Host", which is a Korean blockbuster from 2006. The film attracted some 13 million moviegoers last year, breaking the Korean film record and winning numerous movie awards. It has received positive reviews from famous international film festivals, including Cannes Film Festival and Hawaii International Film Festival.

The movie starts with a U.S. military officer discarding a large amount of formaldehyde into the Han River in Seoul. Consequently, the chemical causes major contamination in the river, which finally leads to the birth of the monster. Fast-forward to the present and the grown-up beast attacks people and kidnaps the Korean girl Hyunseo. The Korean government is only concerned about the virus that is out there without taking any steps to quarantine areas around the river. As a result, it is up to Gangdu and his family to save his daughter Hyun-seo from the monster.

The film can be enjoyed by the entire family as it contains all sorts of fun. It's helped by computer graphics that are very realistic as the actors give all their passion for the movie. "The Host" was cited on the top 10 list by Ain't It Cool News, a major American movie review site. Harry Knowles calls "The Host" the "best full on monster movie since JAWS".

"The Host" is not your ordinary monster movie as it breaks the stereotypes of such films. There are many philosophical and political elements hidden in the film that people cannot stop thinking about them after seeing the movie.
