Korean remake attracts Hollywood's prime players

Major Hollywood directors and actors have expressed their interest in buying the rights to Na Hong-jin's "The Chaser". Current remake right owner Roy LEE of Vertigo Entertainment said that Leonardo di Caprio is among the interested and that he developed a strong interest after watching the film. The remake scenario is currently in development.

Hollywood's remake industry found a new gold market in Korea. Latest Korean remake to spark major interest is this year's well-made socially critical thriller "The Chaser" (Choogyeokja) is directed by feature film debutant Na Hong-jin, and stars Kim Yun-seok and Ha Jung-woo.

"The Chaser" is a sleeper-hit, the film lacks major stars and NA was relatively unknown. After a modest release, positive criticism turned the film into the highest grossing film in the first half of 2008. The thriller reached over 5 million viewers.

"The Chaser" will succeed "My Sassy Girl" (Yeopgijeokin Geunyeo), "Il Mare" (Swiweorae, remake title The Lake House), and a long list of yet unfinished Hollywood remakes of Korean films.
