Local Short Animation Makes Oscars List

SEOUL (Yonhap) - An animated short film by a South Korean director was among those on this year's Academy Award nominations list announced Tuesday night in California.

"Birthday Boy" by Park Se-jong, a resident of Australia, is in the race for the award for best animated short film in the 77th Academy Awards.

Park is the first South Korean to have a work nominated for an Oscar.

Director Kang Je-gyu's Korean War epic "Tae Guk Gi", which received strong reviews from major U.S. newspapers upon its release in the United States last September, missed out on a nomination for best foreign film.

Four other nominees for the animated short film award were "Gopher Broke", "Lorenzo" and "Ryan".

With a running time of 10 minutes, "Birthday Boy" depicts the pain of the 1950-53 Korean War as reflected through the eyes of a child orphaned by the conflict.

"Birthday Boy" was classified as an Australian film, however, because it was produced by the Australian Film Television and Radio School.

Park immigrated to Australia six years ago and is the father of a 2-year-Oldboy with his Australian wife. He has retained Korean nationality.

He won the top award at the 6th Puchon International Student Animation Festival in Bucheon, southwest of Seoul, last November, for the same animated film.

In this year's Oscar nominations, "The Aviator", directed by Martin Scorsese, led other contenders with 11 award nominations, including best picture, best director and best male lead.
