[HanCinema's News] Film Movement Announces Theatrical Screenings for 4K Restorations of Lee Chang-dong Films

The distribution company Film Movement recently announced theatrical screenings for four films from writer/director Lee Chang-dong. The four films in question are "Green Fish" from 1997, "Peppermint Candy" from 2000, "Oasis" from 2002, and "Poetry" from 2009. The restorations will see their premiere at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles with "Peppermint Candy" on April 27th with other films in the series playing at the theater throughout May.

The Gene Siskel Theater in Chicago will have more films straightaway, with "Green Fish" and "Peppermint Candy" playing there on May 3rd and Oasis on May 4th. The TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto will premiere "Peppermint Candy" on May 18th with other films screening there throughout the month. Finally, the SIFF Center in Seattle will begin playing these films on June 21st on a schedule that has not yet been decided.

Lee Chang-dong was one of the major film directors of the Korean New Wave, and all four of these films were enormously influential in the aesthetic of that film culture throughout the aughts. Some of these theaters are also showing "Secret Sunshine" as part of these screenings, despite it not being a new 4K restoration, as it is a similarly important part of his moody style. His last film was "Burning" back in 2018.
