The Host and King and the Clown named hit products of 2006

Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" and Lee Joon-ik's "The King and the Clown" have been voted one of the top ten hit products in Korea for 2006.

On December 20, the Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI) released the results of its annual poll of the most popular products of the past year. Among the ten items selected were the two films "The Host" and "The King and the Clown", speaking to the high profile of film contents in the Korean market. The two films, considered as a single entry, placed fourth.

The films were selected as part of 52 overall nominations for the year's most popular products, and voted on by a wide range of citizens. Other products selected include Pangyo Apartments (#1), the "slim" cell phones (#2), reduced-alcohol soju (#3), TV dramas set in the Goguryeo Dynasty (#5), healthy ("well-being") tea drinks (#6), baseball player LEE Seung-yeop (#7), B-Boys (#8), "skinny" fashion (#9), and flat TV screens (#10).

"The King and the Clown" and "The Host" together earned the equivalent of $175 million at the theatrical box office, and the total economic contribution of the two films to the Korean economy is estimated to be vastly higher.

Last year, the film Welcome to Dongmakgol was also voted into the annual list.
