Theater Version of "Jewel in the Palace" to Debut

The Japanese dailies Nikkan Sports and Junichi Sports have reported recently that a theater version of the TV series "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum") would be staged in December in Tokyo and in February next year in Nagoya.

The two dailies also said that the popular epic drama aired in Japan on a satellite TV channel in 2004 and on a terrestrial TV channel the following year. Recently, the unabridged and undubbed version of the series has been broadcast in the country on NHK-BS2.

NHK invited the series' lead actress, Lee Young-ae, last year to appear on a special live show covering "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"). Some 3,000 Japanese fans flocked to see the show at the time, attesting to its popularity in Japan.

The theater version of the series is a two-and-a-half-hour version of the 54-episode TV series. It is based on the musical "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum")., which has been staged in Korea since May.
