"Welcome to Dongmakgol" picked as official selection for Oscar foreign-language film entries

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairperson Ahn Jung-sook) has picked "Welcome to Dongmakgol" (directed by Bae Jong) as Korea's final official selection for Oscar foreign-language film entries. KOFIC's screening was aimed to expand opportunities for Korean film's advances into the overseas markets.
For this category, each country is charged with the task of submitting one film that has been released in the host country between October 1, 2004 and September 30, 2005. The submitted films are then all screened in Hollywood before five final nominations are announced in January next year.
KOFIC appointed a five-member committee and none of them are concerned with the entries. They chose Dongmakgol based on mainly three criteria: execution, distribution capacity and awareness of director or film. The other eight contenders include Kim Ki-duk's "3-Iron", Lee Myung-se's "Duelist", Heo Jin-ho's "April Snow", Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", Chung Yoon-chul's "Marathon", Ryoo Seung-wan's "Crying Fist" and Kim Jee-woon's "A Bittersweet Life".
South Korea has never had an entry selected as one of the five final nominations. Previous submissions in the past include "Taegukgi" (2004), Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring (2003), "Oasis" (2002), and "Chunhyang" (2000).
The movie about Korean War soldiers who find refuge in a peaceful yet mysterious mountain village opened in theaters nationwide on August 5 and stars Jung Jae-young of "Someone Special" and Kang Hye-jung from "Oldboy". The film enjoyed its fifth consecutive week at the top of the box office last weekend pulling in more than 2,183,000 people in Seoul alone and going on to break the 7.1 million viewer mark making it the fourth most successful film in South Korean movie history, after "Taegukgi" (11.7m admissions), Silmido (11.1m), and "Friend" (8.2m).
