`April Snow' to Fall Throughout Asia

SEOUL (Yonhap) _ "April Snow," an upcoming South Korean film starring Bae Yong-joon, will be released in about 10 Asian nations in September, the film's producer said Thursday.

Bae has become enormously popular throughout Asia as the star of hit drama "Winter Sonata."

"We've already signed contracts with the distributors in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia to release `April Snow' and are on the verge of completing negotiations with the distributors in Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia," a spokesman for distributor Show East Co. said.

"April Snow" tells the story of a man and woman who are betrayed by their respective lovers and fall dangerously in love with each other.

Bae's "Winter Sonata" was a smash hit in many Asian countries, especially in Japan, and was also shown in the Middle East.

"All of them want to release 'April Snow' in September at the same time with South Korea," the spokesman said, adding that marketing programs will also be launched simultaneously.

Show East hopes the matched timing of the release dates will help minimize the fallout of illegal downloading and pirate DVDs throughout Asia.

Show East said it has sold Universal Japan the right to release "April Snow," noting that seven Japanese distributors competed for the right. It would not reveal the sale price.
