`Arahan' Wins Top Prize at Puchon Film Festival

The local comic action film "Arahan" received the grand prize of this year's Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival at the event's closing ceremony on Thursday.
"Arahan" was directed by Ryoo Seung-wan and starred the filmmaker's actor brother Ryoo Seung-bum as a policeman who taps into Taoist superpowers to save the world. The festival called the film "an amazing combination of fantasy, martial arts and comedy" in its press release announcing the winners.
The best director award went to Leonardo Di Cesare for "Good Life Delivery", a film from Argentina about a young man whose home is taken over by his girlfriend's family and their doughnut business.
In an unusual move, the best actor award went to two actors from the same film. Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kervern were given the award for their roles in "Aaltra", a Belgian comedy that looks into the attitude towards the disabled.
Nat Wattanapat received the best actress award for her portrayal of a woman who befriends a suicidal man in the Thai film "My Suicide".
"The Taste of Tea", an offbeat comedy from Japan about a young girl and her family, was given the Jury's Choice Award.
In the short film section, the grand prize went to "Goodbye, Cruel World", a delicate and melancholy film about two alienated people, while the Jury's Choice Award was given to "My Parents", a meditation on the modern family.
The jury for the feature films was chaired by Stuart Gordon, whose horror film "King of the Ants" opened the festival on July 14. The short film jury was headed by director Jang Jun-hwan.
In its eighth year, the festival, also known as PiFan, was held for 10 days in seven locations in Puchon, Kyonggi Province. The festival features sci-fi, fantasy and horror films from here and abroad.
A total of 261 short and feature films from 32 countries were presented during the festival period. According to the data collected by the organizers as of Thursday, the festival recorded a 55 percent occupancy rate.
The local horror film "Bunshinsaba" made its premier at the closing ceremony.
