'Avatar' Approaches Korean Attendance Record

2010/01/25 Source

James Cameron's "Avatar" has attracted more than 10 million viewers in Korea in just 38 days since its release. Now the questions are whether it will surpass the record of 13 million spectators set by the Korean film "The Host" (2006) and if it will become the first film released here to achieve W100 billion in sales (US$1=W1,146).

"Avatar" drew 260,000 viewers in Seoul on Saturday alone, bringing the total to 10.06 million nationwide and becoming the first foreign film to lure over 10 million moviegoers in Korea. To date only five Korean films have hit that milestone, including "The Host" and "Silmido".

With sales of W87.2 billion "Avatar" has also set a new local box-office record, surpassing the W81 billion achieved by the Korean disaster movie "Haeundae". The Hollywood movie's box-office is greater because about 40 percent of its sales come from 3D cinemas which charge higher ticket prices.

Meanwhile, "Avatar" has earned US$525 million in the U.S. and $1.72 billion across the world. It is on track to beat "Titanic", the director's previous work and the highest grossing movie in history ($1.84 billion).
