The domestic sci-fi film, The Host directed by Bong Joon-ho, has passed the three million viewers mark in just six days since its release last Thursday, setting a new box office record.

According to Show Box, the film distributor, the The Host has attracted an audience of 3.7 million nationwide as of Tuesday, breaking records set for the three million mark by the nations previous blockbusters _ "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" and "Silmido" released in 2004 took eight and 11 days, respectively, while the "King and the Clown" took nine days in 2005.

All three of these films exceeded the 10 million mark later in their runs.

In Seoul alone The Host was seen by 1.94 million people over the period, an all time high in the capital.

The film revolves around the story of a peaceful Korea family whose life is shattered by a monster, a mutant created by toxic chemicals dumped in the Han River.

Kang-doo, played by Song Kang-ho, who runs a mini convenience store alongside the river fights against the monster with his father (played by Byun Hee-bong) and other family members to rescue his daughter.

Tickets for the sc-fi film reserved through the Internet before its release reached 95 percent capacity at theaters offering the service, raising expectations that it may well set a new high for audience figures on the local film scene.

It remains to be seen whether it can break the all-time high of 12.3 million viewers set by last year's "King and the Clown".

The film is been now showing in a total of 620 theaters nationwide, the largest number of screens ever for a domestic film.
