'Host' Claws Way to 6th on Box Office List

The monster blockbuster The Host has clawed its way up to sixth in terms of all-time ticket sales after just eleven days.
Son Hee-kyung tells us that at this rate the movie about a mutant living in Seoul's Han River could become Korea's new top grossing film.

The Host is terrorizing not only audiences with a monster appearing from Seoul's Han River but also its competitors at domestic theaters.
The summer blockbuster already ranks sixth on the country's all-time list having sold six million tickets in just eleven days of its release the fastest for a domestic film.
So what's its secret?
Critics say the first key element is the use of a creative subject matter a monster.

"What has fascinated moviegoers is that a mutant monster suddenly emerges from the Han River. The film fulfills viewer curiosity over how a Korean monster would look and move. But more importantly, high quality visual effects and computer graphics are the keys to the film. The movie has a solid plot and enables audiences to realize the importance of family values".

Others point to the film's humanistic theme as another factor behind its success.

"I came to see The Host because my friends recommended it.
I hear it has high quality sound effects. I also wanted to see the love shared between father and daughter".

The movie is about a mutant monster that emerges from the Han River and destroys everything in its path.
A 60-something man goes after the monster after it takes his teenage daughter.

"The question many are asking is if The Host can break the nation's all-time record set by the comedy "The King and the Clown", which garnered 12 million moviegoers.
The film's distributor says chances are high so expect The Host to keep terrorizing the box office and audiences for weeks to come.
