'King and the Clown' voted as No. 1 film

2006/11/20 Source

"King and the Clown" (Wang-ui namja), a low-budget period drama featuring homosexuality, grabbed the No. 1 spot on Korea's top 100 favorite films list, local movie cable channel OCN announced yesterday.

The film depicts the sexual tension between a Joseon monarch and two male court jesters - a sensitive theme that was not previously favored by conservative Korean moviegoers. But the dramatic sensibility and a well-organized plot broke one box-office record after another, emerging as a mega-hit.

OCN said that "The Host", directed by Bong Joon-ho, ranked second, followed by "Taegukgi" and "Welcome to Dongmakgol". Bong's creature blockbuster "The Host" features a monster emerging from the Han River in Seoul, with family members struggling to protect each other in a dreadfully depressing situation.

"Taegukgi", which raised the bar for a Korean blockbuster film, and "Welcome to Dongmakgol", featuring a utopian place in which soldiers from two Koreas and the United States are intertwined in a happy-go-lucky fashion during the Korean War, also won enthusiastic support from local moviegoers.
