'Nanta' Sales Exceed W20 Billion This Year

The non-verbal stage show "Nanta", which combines the rhythm of samulnori, the traditional Korean percussion quartet, cooking and comedy, saw its annual sales surpass W20 billion for the first time, and its number of spectators is estimated to hit a near record-high of 800,000 by the end of this year.

"Taking into account ticket reservations until the end of the year, we expect full-year sales to reach W20.2 billion", the show's producer PMC Production said.

The fast-paced show about a group of chefs preparing a wedding banquet has been a steady seller, consistently pulling in annual sales of over W10 billion for the last couple of years (US$1=W1,290).

The show is staged in four performance halls built exclusively for it in Jeongdong, Cheongdam-dong, and Myeong-dong in Seoul and Jeju Island. The opening of the theater in the trendy shopping district of Myeong-dong in October last year greatly contributed to it bringing in over W20 billion in sales this year.

"Many of the foreign tourists who come to shop in Myeong-dong buy tickets there", PMC said. "Of the 745,000 spectators who watched the show as of Wednesday this week, 625,000 came from overseas, with most of them from Japan, Taiwan and China". With the show's growing popularity in Asia, the Myeong-dong cast includes a Japanese actress, Yuka Iwamoto.

Debuting in 1997 and beginning year-round performances in 2000, "Nanta" has drawn some 5.8 million viewers so far.
