'Silmido' Lawsuit Dismissed

The Central Court yesterday dismissed the lawsuit filed against the film "Silmido" by the relatives of the soldiers that the movie was based upon.

Fifty-nine relatives of Unit 684, also known as the "Silmido" unit, filed a lawsuit last December against Kang Woo-suk, the director of the film and the film's production company. They claimed that the blockbuster film damaged the reputation of the unit by showing them as murderers and criminals.

However, the court found that there was enough evidence that some of the soldiers were in fact criminals. Also, as the film showed the soldiers in a heroic way in the end, and their reputation cannot be considered to be damaged, the court ruled.

Released in December 2003, "Silmido" told the story of a unit of commandoes who were trained to go on a suicide mission to kill the North Korean leader in the late 1960s.
