Korean director Park Chan-wook's latest film "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" has been selected for the competition at the 62nd Venice Film Festival, which starts Aug. 31. All That Cinema, the promoters of the film, said Thursday the selection of the film meant Park achieved a feat only accomplished by one other Korean film director, Im Kwon-taek, to have films invited to all the world's Big Three film festivals. Park's " JSA - Joint Security Area" competed at the Berlin Festival in 2001, and "Old Boy" won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.

The film's star Lee Young-ae will make her second appearance at a major festival after Berlin in 2001, when she starred in " JSA - Joint Security Area".

"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is the ninth Korean film in six years to run in the official competition in Venice, following Lies by Jang Sun-woo in 1999, "The Isle" by Kim Ki-duk in 2000, "Address Unknown" by Kim Ki-duk and "Flower Island" by Song Il-gon in 2001, "Oasis" by Lee Chang-dong in 2002, "A Good Lawyer's Wife" by Im Sang-soo in 2003, and "Low Life" by Im Kwon-taek and "3-Iron" by Kim Ki-duk in 2004.

"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", released in Korea on Thursday, in the third part in the director's revenge trilogy following "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Old Boy". It is the story of Geum-ja, played by Lee, who, after being unjustly imprisoned for 13 years, plots bloody revenge against the man who sent her to jail.
