The Korean blockbuster movie 'Taegukgi' is taking Japan by storm, after a phenomenal run at home.
More than 130,000 viewers saw the movie in the island nation on the first weekend of its release.

South Korean blockbuster 'Taegukgi' got off to a promising start on the first weekend of its release in Japan. On its debut weekend, 'Taegukgi' ranked fourth in Japanese box office sales and was only out-ranked by Hollywood blockbusters 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'The Day After Tomorrow' and the Japanese movie 'Shouting for Love at the Center of the World'.

'Taegukgi's' distributor, 'Showbox' says the total weekend visitors at the film's release topped some 133,000 people, earning nearly W2 billion or roughly US$1.7 million, according to the United International Pictures Japan.

The UIP Japan distributors added the film has earned the most in admissions among all prior Korean-released movies in Japan.

'Taegukgi's current ranking in the first weekend of its distribution replicates that of another Korean blockbuster film, 'Silmido,' which was released earlier in June and ranked within the top ten for four consecutive weeks.

'Taegukgi,' which was released on Saturday is entitled 'Brotherhood' in Japan and is being screened at 300 movie theaters around the nation.

Distributor 'Showbox' says if some 3 million audiences watch the film then they can make a profit of over W100 billion or roughly US$87 million.

The movie about the criss-crossing fates of brothers forced to fight in the Korean War, revives memories of a turbulent time in history.
