The film depicts a major battle in which legendary Korean Admiral Yi Sun-shin defeats over 133 Japanese warships with a fleet of just 12 ships.

The film premiered ahead of a new national memorial day in China that marks the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, when hundreds of thousands were killed at the hands of Japanese troops.

Critics say historical similarities shared by Korea and China seem to have helped raise interest in the movie and its Chinese distributor is banking on it with hopes to rake in more than US$11 million at the box-office.
