1 Person Jumps into the Han River Every 2 Days

Some 892 people tried to kill themselves by jumping from a bridge into the Han River in Seoul between 2006 and 2010, and 375 succeeded, according to figures submitted to lawmaker Kim Chung-jo on Monday by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

On average one person jumps from a bridge into the river every other day.

Per year, 155 people threw themselves into the Han River in 2006, 169 in 2007, 165 in 2008, 210 in 2009, and 193 in 2010, bringing the annual average to 178.

Mapo Bridge saw the most suicide attempts with 113, 12.7 percent, followed by Han River Bridge (81), Wonhyo Bridge (62), Seogang Bridge (54), and Seongsan Bridge (45).

In the last five years, 293 jumpers were reported to the rescue team in Gwangjin District and 599 to Yeongdeungpo District, with 517 saved.
