Leaving Korea today, Feb. 10, for the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, is 25-year-old director Yang Hyo-joo, whose short film "Broken Night" has been invited to the competition. "Broken Night" is Yang's third film, already a prize-winner at last Fall's Pusan Festival, and was a graduation project for her final year at Korea National University of Arts.

In a pre-departure interview with The Korea Herald, Yang told the interviewer that it was the late renowned Korean director Kim Ki-young's masterpiece "The Housemaid - 1960" that inspired her to become a filmmaker.

"I make films because I've been always curious about what human beings do when they are put into extreme situations", Yang is quoted as saying. She adds that she aims to make movies of all genres in the future, including horror, comedy, thriller and costume drama.

The newspaper explains: "'Broken Night', tells a story of a middle-aged criminal who constantly fakes car accidents to earn insurance money. He one day runs into a homeless teen couple who fake motorcycle accidents to do the same.  Conflict arises as the teenage couple robs the man after creating an accident and run away. The man, who chases them down after being attacked, finds out the girl has been severely wounded".
