2nd CHIFFS Wraps with Awards

The 2nd Chungmuro International Film Festival in Seoul (CHIFFS) wrapped up its 9 day run Sept. 11thwith an awards ceremony for its inaugural competition section. Of the 4 main awards, the Grand Prize, worth US$ 30,000 went to 2007 Serbian film Trap by Srdan Golubovic.

A Special Jury prize, worth $5,000, went to Aida Begic's Snow, of neighboring country Bosnia-Herzegovina. CHIFFS' Discovery award ($3,000) went to 2007 Korean feature, "Happiness", by melodrama auteur Heo Jin-ho. Johnnie To and Wai Ka Fai crime-thriller Mad Detective apprehended the Audience Choice award.

The international jury was headed by American director Michael Cimino, with Korean director Im Sang-soo, Japanese film critic Terawaki Ken, French actress and producer Lise Bellynck, and Korean Producer Kim Young taking part.

A total of 171 films were screened, running the gamut from classic to cult to contemporary. The festival, with a budget of over $6 million, aims to be part of the revival of the Chungmuro district of Seoul, the traditional home of Korean cinema in its golden era.
