2NE1 Voted Best New Band of 2011 by MTV

MTV has named Korean girl group 2NE1 its "Best New Band in The World" for 2011 according to an online vote, their management agency YG Entertainment said on Friday.

MTV Iggy asked for netizens around the world to vote on their favorite new band over a six-week period starting from early last month.

Over 4 million music fans from 168 countries participated in the vote to pick the winner, with the 10 finalists including Britain's Ghostpoet, Skrillex of the U.S. and Malaysia's Yuna.

"2NE1 represents a new type of global music star: one that inspires passion not with the language they speak or their cultural heritage, but with talent and sheer ambition", MTV wrote. "They eschew cutesy girlish fashion for a strong and independent look, in keeping with the empowering message of their music".

The band will perform along with some of the finalists at MTV's Studio in New York's Times Square on Dec. 12.
