3 Asian Leaders Discuss Korean Pop Culture

2005/12/12 | 69 views | Permalink | Source

President Roh Moo-hyun and the leaders of China and Japan on Monday briefly discussed the popularity of Korean pop culture in Asia.

Ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Plus Three summit in Malaysia, the three leaders met for five minutes after Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's controversial visits to the Yasukuni Shrine led to the demise of this year's trilateral talks.

Koizumi said Korean pop culture, or "Hallyu", is quite popular in Japan and that he heard it is gaining popularity in China.

Roh said Chinese culture flowed into Korea 2,500 years ago and that of Japan did so from a hundred years ago, but that Korean culture is now spreading to China and Japan.

Presidential spokesman Kim Man-soo said the president expressed hope that Hallyu's popularity will serve as an opportunity to establish common cultural ground among the three nations.
