3D Films Set to Increase in Korea and Asia Region

3D films are expected to increase in Korea representing a greater regional Asian trend. This could not come at a more welcome time. Despite significant success at the box office of late with films such as "Haeundae" and "Take Off" box office results in general have been sluggish as has the rapidly shrinking market in ancillaries. Add to this the worldwide growth in illegal downloading which has made a significant and growing dent in ticket sales. 3D films on the other hand, at this stage are unable to be pirated. In addition, even if pirating was possible, watching 3D films at home would defeat much of the 3D experience boosting their appeal with cinema -going audiences.

At the recent Pucheon Fantastic International Film Festival's NAFF (Network of Asian Fantastic Films the FDL (Filmmakers Development Lab) announced Korea's first 3D film project Soul Mate. This U.S $2M film is to be mentored by The Ring producer Mike Macari. Producers at NAFF agreed that 3D had the potential to bring in greater sales – at present although 3D films might only account for 16% of total sales they bring in 50% of the profits.

This new technology mindset is replicated throughout Asia where producers are developing more and more 3D projects to accompany the vast amount of Hollywood 3D movies to be released this year. As it stands Korea has 47 3D screens, Japan 100 and China more than 200. However, China, notorious for its strict annual quota of only 20 revenue sharing films granted special approval to import 3D films outside of the quota. U.S animations Bolt, Up and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was released under these new conditions. Singapore and Indonesia are also partnering to make a 3D film and Japan's first live-action 3D film just wrapped up shooting.

This 3D wave is not only hitting film but other digital mediums like gaming, IPTV and internet shopping, boosting the overall popularity of the new technology. Soul Mate is expected to be released in the summer of 2010.
