Actress Lee Young-ae Invited to Berlin Film Festival as Juror

Actress Lee Young-ae has been invited to the 56th Berlin International Film Festival slated for Feb. 9, local time, as a juror for its international competition division.

Lee Joo-yul, president of Lee Young-ae's agency, Door Entertainment, said on Jan. 9, "Ms. Lee Young-ae has been invited to the Berlin International Film Festival as a juror for its international competition division. She will join seven to nine other jurors to select the winners of the Golden Bear and other awards from among about 20 films presented by countries from around the world".

This is the first time for a Korean actor or actress to be invited as a juror to the competition division of any of the world's top three international film festivals -- the Cannes, Berlin and Venice festivals.

From Asia, the Berlin International Film Festival has so far invited actresses mainly from Chinese-speaking regions, such as Maggie Cheung (張曼玉, 1997), Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊, 1999), and Gong Li (鞏悧, 2000).

According to Lee Joo-yul, the organizers of the Berlin International Film Festival have reportedly taken interest in evaluations made by other international film festivals, including the Venice Film Festival, of Lee Young-ae's latest film "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005) directed by Park Chan-wook.

Back in 2001, Park's previous film "JSA - Joint Security Area" (2000) starring Lee Young-ae was invited to the competition division of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Meanwhile, Lee Joo-yul expressed his displeasure with some local news media outlets' hasty reporting of the film festival's selection of Lee Young-ae as a juror.

Lee Joo-yeol said, "Ms. Lee Young-ae already received an official invitation from the film festival on Sep. 29 last year. We did not make it public at a request from the film festival's secretariat to keep it quiet".

The 56th Berlin International Film Festival will be held for ten days from Feb. 9 to 19. Lee Young-ae will leave for Berlin in advance to attend an official press conference arranged for the jury of the film festival.

The jury of this year's Berlin International Film Festival will be chaired by Charlotte Rampling, a British actress who has come into the spotlight for her films "Angel Heart" (1987) and "Swimming Pool" (2003).
