Amid criticism on the possibility of DMB's poor reception, many worry about the performance of PMP

Digital Multimedia Broadcasting's (DMB) transmission service of Binary Incoding for Scene (BIFS), which will be launched next month, has been criticized that it might suffer from poor reception. The PMP industry, which has become popular with its DMB function, discussed possible countermeasures.

According to an industry source, companies who sell DMB-type PMPs have begun addressing concerns on the"DMB reception catastrophe". Such concerns have become widespread after product tests on reception quality, but technical measures have also been put in place.

HOMECAST, a company who sells "TVUS", a PMP device with DMB reception, recently updated a notice to its customers on the company website, saying that it had already completed the product' s BIFS reliability test before its release, and that it added a security device to a newly introduced software, "Firmware v. 1.06".

DIGITAL CUBE (056010), the no. 1 product in the PMP industry, also announced that it had taken technical measures so that its "iStation" would not suffer from poor BIFS reception.

KOWON (056000), a company famous for its "KOWON A2", told that a BIFS reception test with KBS did not show any poor reception issues. "We did not find any problems, so we decided not to put a notice on the company website", said KOWON.

MERCURY, a company that sells communication equipment like a PMP-type navigation device, released "iStar MD 100", a product that completely addressed BIFS reception issues.

BIFS is a core technology for interactive data broadcasting, and is to be transmitted with the existing DMB terrestrial wave to the National Capital Region starting September 20. Some specialists, however, worry that there are many DMB devices that do not support BIFS, and they could cause widespread poor reception once BIFS is transmitted.
