Arirang TV to Celebrate Decade With Gala Show

Arirang TV, a state-funded English TV channel, will hold a special gala show to celebrate its 10th anniversary on Friday.

Titled "10th Anniversary Special Arirang Gala Concert", the show will present all kinds of music.

The theme is "Arirang", probably the best-known Korean folk song. It is regarded as a projection of Korean pathos.

The show will be held at Yeakdang Hall at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts in southern Seoul.

The performances will feature attempts to blend Korean traditional music with Western music.

The show will include high-profile Korean traditional music signer Chang Sa-ik and saxophonist Lee Jung-sik, Korean fusion percussion group Puri and others.

It will also feature a court dance blending Buddhist and shamanistic dances called "choyong-podung muhapsol".

The court dance is based on a shamanistic myth. Five dancers wearing masks decorated with artificial peaches and peonies in blue, white, red, black and yellow costumes perform to drive off evil spirits at the end of the year.

A Buddhist dance involving a lantern will be harmonized with the shamanistic performance.

To attend the show, e-mail: or call (02) 3475-5252.

Arirang TV was launched in 1997. It aims to promote Korea through cutting-edge, 24-hour broadcasting.
