Art and Culture

It's finally Friday and the weekend is upon us. And to make our weekends more interesting with fun arts and culture events, we have our Michelle Kim here with us to give us some recommendations on things we can do.

Hello Michelle

[Reporter : ] Hello Conn-young

So what do you have for us today[Reporter : ] Cellist-turned-conductor Chang Han-na will be teaming up with her teacher of 20 years, Mischa Maisky, for two concerts with her Absolute Classic Festival Orchestra in Seoul. Take a look.

Conductor Chang Han-na and legendary cellist Mischa Maisky will stand on one stage for the first time in the 20 years they've known each other, for two concerts in Seoul this Saturday and next.

The look in their eyes as they rehearse for their next performance, shows affection and trust.

[Interview : Mischa Maisky, Cellist] "With my great teacher, Rostropovich, a conductor, it never worked out. So now, it became another kind of dream come true".

[Interview : Chang Han-na, Maestro Absolute Classic Festival Orchestra] "I'm very excited to be able to perform every cello concerto with my teacher".

For their performance together, Maisky chose his favorite piece, Richard Strauss' "Don Quixote".
He was very quick to decide to come to Korea for the concert and said that he was very excited to see what kind of music his gifted student would choose as a conductor.

[Interview : Mischa Maisky, Cellist] "To be honest, when I first heard about it I was a little bit surprised and even somewhat skeptical. But I watched a little clip that I found on the internet but I was impressed".

It has been 6 years since Chang exchanged her bow for a baton, but she has found great success as the conductor of the Absolute Classic Festival Orchestra. She says that she will never forget the lessons her professor taught her about loving others and the spirit of giving.

[Interview : Chang Han-na, Conductor Absolute Orchestra] "I think conductors have been given a special power to bring people together through music, and I hope to use this power to contribute to society".

Chang Han-na and Mischa Maisky will perform together on Saturday at the Sungnam Arts Center's Opera Theater.

Sounds like a performance that should not be missed. Which pieces will be played[Reporter : ] On Saturday, they will play Richard Struass' "Don Quixote" and "A Hero's Life". For the concert on September 1st, they will play Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Ravel's "La Valse" and "Bolero". I'm sure a lot of people will attend the concert so those of you in Seoul will want to reserve tickets if you haven't already done so.

That's good to know. There are so many reasons to see this concert, not only to see two respected artists perform but also to see a student leading her teacher. And now moving on, what else do you have for us[Reporter : ] Next, I'll give you a sneak peek of the movie "Lawless", which is scheduled to open in Korea in October. The gangster film is based on a true story and features a talented cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman. Take a look.

Actors Shia LaBeouf and Guy Pearce headed to the red carpet on the 22nd for the L.A. premiere of "Lawless", an epic gangster tale set in Prohibition-era America.

The film is based on the novel, "The Wettest County in the World", which tells the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers, three siblings who bootlegged moonshine in rural Virginia during the Depression.

LaBeouf, who plays Jack Bondurant, said that what intrigued him about the film was the depth of the characters.

[Interview : Shia LaBeouf, Actor] "Good guys that are only good are not interesting, bad guys who are only bad are not interesting. I think human beings are abstract, and I think John Hillcoat and Nick Cave's script reflected that. People have layers".

The star said he was also very excited to work with such a great group of actors all at once.

[Interview : Shia LaBeouf, Actor] "For me it is the real life 'Avengers', " said LeBeouf. "We are surrounded by real life superheroes -- they all have their own magic power. It was really cool and a wonderful opportunity".

"Lawless" opens in theaters on August 29th in the U.S. and on October 18th in Korea.
