The low point so far was in 2005, when 435,031 babies were born, translating into a birthrate of 1.05 children per woman, but this year it is expected to fall to below 430,000.

Statistics Korea on Thursday said the number of childbirths in the first five months of this year stood at 182,300, down 10,200 from the same period last year.

The trend is expected to continue in the second half of this year, so childbirths could fall four to five percent compared to 2015, a Statistics Korea spokesman said.
