BONG joins Gondry and Carax for Tokyo Project

2007/03/06 | 121 views | Permalink | Source

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The Host" director Bong Joon-ho will participate in an omnibus project along with French directors Michel Gondry and Leos Carax. The film will be a triptych of tales set in Tokyo hence the working title "Tokyo Tales" ("TOKYO!"). Each director will write and direct a segment, with the shootings, pending negotiations, expected to begin in July or August around the same time.

BONG completed the script for his segment of the film while on route from Australia to New York, a 26-hour flight. He is in NY to attend a mini-retrospective of his films and is also promoting the Magnolia Pictures release of hit thriller The Host in US theaters.

While the plots for "Tokyo Tales" ("TOKYO!") are still hush-hush, BONG is quoted in the Reporter as saying, "It will be just like 'New York Stories' but set in Tokyo", adding only that his story involves a relationship between a Japanese man and woman.

Gondry is known for his mind-bending films "The Science of Sleep" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". The lesser-known Carax directed critically acclaimed features, "Pola X", "Sans Titre", and "The Lovers on the Bridge". BONG, who broke ground internationally with his sophomore effort "Memories of Murder", debuted with social-satire "Barking Dogs Never Bite".

Paris-based Comme des Cinemas will produce the new project. Access to city locations will apparently be liberally granted by Tokyo-city government in exchange for the Tokyo-centric themed tales in an international package. BONG's "The Host" opened last fall in theaters around Japan, however box office receipts were less than expected.
