It is the first Korean film that will be released in 167 countries, and it had the largest budget of any film in Korean cinematic history at around US$40 million.

Seven years ago, director Bong Joon-ho read a French graphic novel about the last human survivors on a train during a new ice age, and imagined adapting it for film.

The film's leading actors, including Tilda Swinton, came to Seoul early this week to celebrate its Korean premiere, appearing at a press conference and a red-carpet event.
