The feat comes with many "firsts". The septet are the first K-pop act to win Top Social Artist for three times running, to win the main Top Duo/Group and to bag two Billboard awards in the same year.

BTS fans, known as "the Army", camped out in front of the award venue for hours and were transported into screaming delight when their idols appeared on the red carpet. Some swooned, tears flowed copiously, and a blizzard of mobile phone flashes blinded the mild-mannered stars.

BTS beat Maroon 5 to the Top Duo/Group award, one of the top five honors. Former winners include Backstreet Boys, Beyonce's former group Destiny's Child and One Direction.

BTS' leader RM said, "Thank you, ARMY. Still can't believe we're here on this stage with so many great artists, oh my god".

"ARMY, this is only possible because of the little things we shared together", he added graciously. "And we're still the same boys from six years ago. We still have the same dreams. We still have the same feelings; we still have the same thoughts. So let's keep dreaming the best dreams together".

They then performed the title song "Boy with Luv" from their latest album with Halsey, who collaborated on the song.
