Catholic school opens institute on Korean wave

The Catholic University of Korea (CUK) has opened a Hallyu Knowledge Center under its Hallyu Graduate School to promote studies of the Korean culture wave.

The center will establish a network of hallyu experts to facilitate exchanges between them, the school said Friday.

It will be headed by professor Yim Hak-soon who specializes in the study of cultural content. The center will make various publications about hallyu, including an English hallyu journal and newsletters. It will also pursue research projects on developing business strategies utilizing hallyu as well as host international conferences and forums on the topic.

"The center will develop a cultural business model based on hallyu that can be applied by corporations and other institutions of various fields", said Yim.

The university recently opened its Hallyu Graduate School on its Seoul campus in order to study the hallyu phenomenon and develop it further to enhance national competitiveness. It provides courses on K-pop, K-dramas and the country's entertainment business.

The school recently signed an agreement with the Korea Creative Contents Agency and KOTRA to collaborate on developing cultural contents.
