CGV and City of Seoul to Provide English Subtitles for Korean Movies

2010/05/07 Source

Korean movies have not been all that foreigner-friendly in the past despite achieving international acclaim.
These Canne trophy winning, cutting-edge films were often entertainment only for those who understood Korean.
But now, the table is about to turn.

[Reporter : ] "CGV, Korea's largest multiplex theater, has joined hands with the Seoul metropolitan government to provide English subtitles for Korean films".

Beginning with Lee Joon-ik's latest film, 'Blades of Blood', English subtitles will be offered for 20 Korean movies this year at CGV branches in Yongsan, Gangnam, Myeongdong and Guro.
Although this isn't the first time CGV has offered subtitles, this year's Korean film promotion is expected to gain momentum with the full backing of the city of Seoul.

[Interview : ] "We are pursuing subtitle services to further promote Korean movies globally and also to provide English learning opportunities for people here as well".

English subtitles are expected to contribute significantly to expand the scope of viewers by attracting more international residents here in the country who have long been waiting to enjoy Korean films on the big screen.

[Interview : ] "There was one called the 'The Good, the Bad, the Weird' and I didn't get to see it because it wasn't subtitled.
If they make it more accessible by having subtitles, I would certainly come see more them".
