China Cuts No. of Korean TV Dramas

Chinese media this year are apparently seeking to contain the popularity of Korean pop culture by sharply reducing the number of Korean drama telecasts.

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television recently said it will cut this year the airtime of Korean dramas by as much as half of last year's.

Since a bilateral row over tainted kimchi imports erupted in August, calls in China are growing to limit the broadcast of Korean dramas given their surging popularity and ensuing frequency on the air.

Some Chinese have blasted viewers of Korean dramas unpatriotic and cite South Korea's strict barriers to Chinese cultural and agricultural imports.

China's state-run network CCTV also said it will diversify its foreign drama programming in an apparent attempt to reduce the weight of Korean productions.
