Chinese TV Network Launches Channel on Korean Dramas

A Chinese TV network will launch an exclusive channel featuring Korean dramas for the first time. According to the "Sichuan Ribao" (四川日報) on August 25, the Sichuan TV Station (SCTV) will begin airing Korean TV dramas on an exclusive channel under the title "Hanfeng Liying" (韓風麗影), which means "beautiful natural features and culture of Korea", around the end of this month.

According to the daily, SCTV has opened a new program on its Channel 7 with the purpose of exclusively showing Korean TV dramas. The dramas will be aired two times from 9:40 p.m. every night.

The Chinese daily analyzed that SCTV may have decided to get the upper hand of other networks in competition over viewer ratings by satisfying female viewers' demand for Korean dramas.

Korean dramas have so far been broadcast through CCTV-1's "Ganqing Juchang" (感情劇場), meaning "dramas about heartwarming stories", and CCTV-8's "Haiwai Juchang" (海外劇場), or "dramas from foreign countries" programs. But this is the first time a Chinese TV network has ever launched a program under the title of "Korean dramas".

Through the "Hanfeng Liying" program, SCTV will air, for a start, nine popular Korean dramas, beginning with "Women's World", which already won high viewer ratings when it was broadcast via CCTV-8 in China. Other Korean dramas will include "Full House", "Lovers in Paris", and "Oh! Pil-seung, Bong Soon-Young".
