CJ Entertainment expands into Japan

Korean powerhouse CJ Entertainment is set to launch a major joint venture with Japanese studio Toei's exhibition chain T-Joy this month. The initiative will cover investment and distribution with ambitions to become one of the top five distributors in Japan by 2014.

CJ, which holds 60% of the joint venture capital, will brand itself CJ Japan and aims to distribute at least five Korean films a year through T-Joy's 142 screens across Japan. It also plans to produce and distribute 3 to 5 Japanese films a year, and co-produce 2 to 3 films for the regional or global market.

CJ CEO Katherine KIM confirmed the plans to press in Pusan last week, saying, "We'll be joining the dynamic and competitive filmmaking contents of Korea with the stable system of Japan to create new innovation in Asia and furthermore in the world". The venture builds on years of cooperation and partnership. CJ has previously co-produced the pan-Asian films Goo Goo The Cat and Fish Story with Japan.
