Computer graphic director wins best award in Resfest

Computer graphic director Kim Seung-mo, 26, won the grand prize for his latest music video at the film and digital arts festival Resfest on Sunday (Dec. 10).

Kim grabbed the Res-choice award, the top award given by the jury, for his music video of the hip-hop group Dynamic Duo.

There were 19 sections, or a total of 297 short and feature-length digital films from 30 countries, showing at the festival. They were selected from 2,200 submissions.

Kim's music video, titled "Funk The World", uses 3D animation technology.

"I am very glad to have a chance to show my work to the public, as the music video was banned from airing on the major broadcasters because of its lyrics, which contain the F word", Kim said.

Kim said that the music video won the award because it contained creative beauty rather than logical structure. The festival's puts the most emphasis on innovative and hybrid content, unlike other commercial film festivals.

Kim also contributed the visual effects and computer graphics in the local short film "Happy Birthday", directed by Hong Jun-won, which was invited to compete in the short film competition at the Venice Film Festival last year.

He is now working as an art director on the local film "Herb", starring actress Kang Hye-jung.

The festival that originally kicked off in Chicago was held from Dec. 6-10 at Yonsei University's Centennial Hall, making Seoul its 16th destination this year.

Since beginning in San Francisco, the United States, in 1995, Resfest has become a major festival, touring 40 cities annually.

The festival explores experimental aspects of digitally generated media and feature films. It includes seminars, experiential parties and performances reflecting the character of each city it visits.
