Consolidating the distribution network: the most urgent task for the development of Korean animation

"Korea's short animation, as you can see from 'Bakkom', is world-class. If it produces a star director like Miyazaki Hayao, the global demand for Korean animation will soar", Jean Poulot, an internationally renowned claymation director, stressed in the Planning & Creation Academy's Integrated Lecture at the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA,CEO: Suh, Byung-Moon) last December 14.

Director Poulot had worked 12 years for Will Vinton Studio in the U.S. as an animation designer and director, and received an Emmy for the TV series "Claymation Easter". Currently, he is a guest professor at the Claymation program of Kookmin University.

Poulot also briefly discussed the following matters: the importance of establishing a distribution system in the Korean animation industry, complementary elements of Korean storytelling, and the present and future of Korean short animation.

"Even well-known works like 'Oseam' cannot be released in foreign markets in the DVD or VHS formats", said the director. "To develop the Korean animation industry, a distribution infrastructure must be established".

"Korea's animation stories are too sad compared to those of Disney or Pixar", he continued. "Animation must be fun and exciting so that they could engage the viewers".

These integrated lectures by leading professionals in the field of cultural contents are offered monthly to the students in the academy's planning and creation courses.
