It is the first time since its inception in 1963 that the annual festival, which was due to kick off on March 27 in Jinhae, South Gyeongsang Province, will not be held.

The city government said that it puts priority on the health and safety of the public amid the epidemic, while acknowledging that the festival brings a huge boost to the local economy.

"We will come up with measures to offset the economic fallout from the cancellation and work to make next year's festival even more special", the city government added.
