Crayon Pop Subvert Sexy Stereotypes

Stereotypical and over-abundant may be appropriate words to describe the current crop of K-pop singers. There are so many generic bands with similar looks that it is difficult to distinguish one from another.

But Crayon Pop defy such stereotypes by thumbing their nose at sexy girl bands and they are far from the cookie-cutter mold.

This unique girl group started off late last year by holding ad-hoc concerts on the streets of heavily populated areas in Seoul such as Dongdaemun, Gangnam Station and the Hongik University area.

Some passersby watched their performance and posted clips on social networking sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Such efforts paid off and they managed to garner a wider fan base from teens to fans in older age groups.

They refuse to conform to popular ideas about capitalizing on band members' sex appeal. Rather than the flashy look of most girl groups, they often wear sneakers and jogging suits. This fresh approach has worked for fans that are growing weary of homogenous girl groups.

But it remains to be seen how far their bold and unconventional approach will carry them forward.
