DICON 2007 to focus on cultural content, technology

International Digital Content Conference (DICON) will start its two-day run on Sept. 10 at COEX in southern Seoul, with an emphasis on technology that integrates its content with other media, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said yesterday.

Under the theme of "Converging Media: Content Business Strategies", the event will feature Korean and foreign experts in cultural content and related technologies. Ministry officials said the conference will provide a broad overview of the pending issues and technological advances in the related sectors.

DICON, co-organized by the Korea Culture and Content Agency and the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, marks its seventh year, and has positioned itself as a major cultural content conference in Asia.

This year, the convergence of broadcasting and communication technologies will be the focus, along with current strategies concerning the cultural content industry. Increasingly, cultural content and related solutions play a key role in generating new revenues for animation, films and other high-value-added industries.

DICON organizers cite the box-office success of "D-War", a monster flick directed by Shim Hyung-rae, as a prime example of where the so-called 'culture technology' is at work. Computer graphics, for instance, helped boost ticket sales of the film, and such technological prowess is what the Korean government is trying to achieve in the culture sector, the Culture Ministry said, adding that it is investing about 10 billion won ($10.6 million) in culture technology projects annually.

At the conference, guest speakers include David Eun of Google, a U.S.-based search engine; Leo Chu, a world-renowned animator; Shuzo John Shiota, a computer graphics expert known for his celebrated role in popular Japanese animations; and Sue Bea Montgomery, who helped produce Hollywood animation features such as "A Bug's Life".
